What Is Going On With Delta Airlines? Delays, Cancellations & A Catastrophe
Intro
If you happen to be flying on Delta this week, this article might just be for you. It's bad news across the board as over the weekend, Delta canceled 4500 flights. As of this morning, Delta has canceled 400 flights and counting. Heck, it's not even 9:30 am on the West Coast!
With all the delays going on, let's find out why!
Okay, But Why?
The original problem stemmed last Thursday night when Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity software, issued a software update that crashed Windows (which most airlines use). Other airlines, such as United, were able to recover for the most part with limited cancellations and delays. However, Delta has been unable to fix the issues with its crew tracking systems. That means it can't find the pilots and crews to fly the planes!
So What Does This Mean For Passengers?
If you are a passenger hoping to fly on Delta this week, be wary, as the flight might get delayed or canceled. Delta seems to be prioritizing longer flights to Europe and Asia since these have higher yields and are harder to make up. Reports have confirmed that passengers have been left stranded for days at their vacation destination (Reddit is a fun place to check out 😂).
Expect these delays to last through the week, although hopefully, they will get better and better as the week goes on. If you happen to be flying Delta, look into other Skyteam options so that if your flight gets delayed, you can go to the airline and ask to be switched onto a partner flight (this worked for me this year).
Final Thoughts
Delta's operation is in complete shambles, even 5 days after the initial meltdown. If you happen to be flying with this airline in the next week, be prepared for delays and potential cancellations. If you have to be somewhere and your flight gets canceled, go to a Delta desk (or call) with the flight numbers you want to be changed to.
