United Airlines Now Offering Online Check-In To Basic Economy
Intro
United has just announced that starting shortly, passengers booked into basic economy will now be eligible for online check-in. In the past, due to baggage checks, passengers would have to check in when at the airport. As much as I don't like buying basic economy fares, this could be useful for those who do.
Money Making Scheme?
Moving forward, United now has a new strategy of getting bag fees from people who fall victim to the basic economy trap. This won't be as much of an issue for frequent travelers, but it sort of seems directed at people who don't fly a lot.
Now, if you happen to have a second carry-on bag while at the gate, United will charge 65$ to the credit card that was on file during check-in, with no exceptions.
My Thoughts
Surprisingly, I'm not a fan of this new concept. I do like the fact that one can now check in online, but this might prove problematic in getting planes out on time. Think about certain routes with a population density of people who don't fly as much. They happen to go and board, realize that they now have to pay 65$, and then start debating with the gate agent (this is my experience from what I've seen).
My other issue with this is how they now upcharge at the gate. It is cheaper to pay for a second bag during check-in, and they are now raising it so it is 1/3 more expensive at the gate. I don't see the issue for people who knowingly take advantage of trying to get away with two bags, but I just think it isn't right for people who are confused. A lot of airlines across the world don't have this "basic economy concept."
Final Thoughts
United Airlines will now be allowing online check-in for those booked into "basic economy". While this will be great for frequent travelers, I can imagine there might be some turmoil at the gate for passengers who don't fly as frequently.
