Turkish Airlines Expanding To Minneapolis

Konrad Tillman

Intro

Turkish Airlines has one of the most extravagant international networks in the world, serving the likes of anything from Mogadishu to Los Angeles to Kabul. However, they also have a very good stronghold on the US market, as no US airlines currently serve any routes to Istanbul. Well, Turkish Airlines has just announced it will begin serving Minneapolis shortly, and it's exciting to see them attack a Delta hub.

The Details

A little while ago, Turkish Airlines announced that it planned to launch service to four new destinations in the USA being Philadelphia, Orlando, Minneapolis, and Charlotte (none being Star Alliance hubs, interestingly). Well, it seems that Turkish Airlines has chosen to initiate service on the 5,500 route first to Minneapolis, as the Chairman said that customers are likely to see service soon (probably April/May.

It'll be interesting to see how many weekly flights there will be between the two cities, as my guess is this won't be a daily service, but rather a 4x weekly. In addition, I am curious to see which aircraft will operate, as my guess is that we might see a 787 take the reigns.

For those who have followed the blog, I am not the biggest fan of Delta for a number of reasons (I will say their D1 catering and D1 Lounges are sublime). It's going to be a pleasant suprise to a non-Skyteam carrier offering something internationally to Europe/Asia (minus Icelandair). There is no chance Delta can compete on this route, and I would imagine that they won't even try to do so due to the connection opportunities that TK has in Istanbul.

Final Thoughts

Turkish Airlines has just announced that the airline will begin flying to Minneapolis in the Spring of 2025. While details remain limited as of now, expect the service to be at least 4x weekly, and hopefully with a 787 (rather than their old A330s). Exciting competition to be had in MSP!
