Taking The Train From Hong Kong Airport To Kowloon

Intro

Once landing from Los Angeles onboard United Airlines, and clearing that gosh-forsaken immigration, I had to figure out a way to get to Kowloon. Ordinarily, like last time I was here and staying at the Four Seasons, I usually would take a taxi or Uber for around 3-400 HKD. However, seeing as I have plenty of time to kill today in Hong Kong I figured that I might as well spice it up a bit by taking the train!

What It's Like

When landing in Hong Kong, head through the customs (hopefully, nothing to declare), and there will be signs directing you to all sorts of different things. However, follow the signs showcasing a high-speed railway train, and the track will be just in front of you.

However, even if the track is right in front of you, I realized that I still need to purchase a ticket. For a city as advanced as Hong Kong, I figured that this would be straightforward; but it is not.

You can either use one of the ATMS located near the automated ticket machines as you have to pay in cash, or head up to the booth my the tracks, which is usually quite bust, and pay by credit card there.

The cost varies on destination and time spent in Hong Kong. A one-way ticket from Hong Kong Airport to Kowloon came out to 105 HKD, while a same-day return was the exact same cost. Considering a round-trip taxi would set me back about 600, this is quite a good deal.

If you do pay by cash, you will only receive change via coins...

The trains are relatively frequent and from what I could tell run every 10 minutes. This means that if you are thinking of taking the train into the city, you shouldn't have to wait very long at all to get on board.

And once you are onboard, it truly is a beautiful, high-speed train. Everything is pretty much flawless on this train, with comfortable seating, good legroom, and no people. In addition, it took about 20 minutes flat until we pulled into Kowloon which is pretty good in terms of time.

So sure, there is no service or free wifi onboard. However, I was happy to find that my cell service never cut out during this journey, even through the few brief tunnels. When most trains pass through tunnels, the service usually cuts out, but not this one! Not bad!

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a cheap and efficient way to get from Hong Kong International Airport to downtown or Kowloon, look no further than the Express train. For 105 HKD roundtrip, it is either 20 minutes flat to Kowloon, or 24 minutes to Hong Kong Island. I can't wait to take this back later today!
