Staying At An Airbnb In Lagos, Nigeria: My Experience

Intro

When it comes to accomodation in Lagos, Nigeria, you have plenty of options to choose from. There are some top tier hotels such as the Sheraton, and Radisson Blu, but the one that was recommended to me was the Eko Hotel and Suites. On the flip side, there are also plenty of places to stay for cheap (in comparison to other countries). Certain Airbnbs can go as low as around 15-20$ per night, but I chose a mid level one at around 45$ per night.

For those wondering, my hosts name was Ekenamolisa, and the property name was BDG homes on Airbnb🙂.

The Space

The first thing that I noticed about the Airbnbs I stayed at in Africa is that they usually aren't seperate buildings. Instead, the set of Airbnb listings were all in the same building, but each had its own seperate door.

The funniest part was when I arrived in a Mercedes Maybach Van, and a whole police unit to the Airbnb. The host looked at me and started laughing 😂.

However, the rooms were more than adequate for my night in Lagos, and I was able to get a good nights sleep on a comfortbale bed. The attention to detail that was presneted to the laid out amenities on the bed was top notch.

The Bathroom

Off to the corner from the bed was a small little bathroom featuring a toilet, sink and shower. Everything worked well apart from that there was no hot water for the shower in the morning. To be honest, this was an ongoing theme on my trip, and occaisonally, I would go 3-4 days without a shower...

Incase you haven't gathered yet, I would recommend not drinking the tap water...

The Kitchen

Even if I didn't get to use it, the studio I was staying in featured a beautiful kitchen with all sorts of cooking equipment. I could have happily lived in this place for a week or two.

What! They even had a television with Netflix and other streaming platforms. I began feeling a bit of anxiety about Somalia, and ended up watching Black Hawk Down to try and settle the anxiety. It did quite the opposite😅.

The Police Escort

So, while I am incredibly grateful that my friend did arrange a police escort for me in Lagos, it turned out to be a little but captivating in the evening. The commander had informed the security at the front of the property to not let me leave the property which was quite annoying. I would have loved to go for a late night stroll in downtown Lagos.

At the end of the day, it is what it is, but next time I will certainly opt out of the police escort if I can. Although, I did need a long sleep that night to prepare for the next few days, as it would be crazy....

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a reasonably priced place to stay in Lagos, this is the place for you. Check out BDG homes on Airbnb, and you will have a nice stay. There is a gated entrance with round the clock securtiy guards, the hosts are lovely, and the bed is comfortable. Hopefully you manage to get hot water during your stay though, as for some reason I just didn't have it😁.

Stay tuned for more!
