Review: Town Lodge Hotel Johannesburg Airport
Intro
Following a flight on RwandAir from Kigali to Johannesburg, it was time for an overnight layover in Jo’burg. Johannesburg offers plenty of hotels near the airport, but only two are a part of the airport. Due to the prices on both of the airside properties, I decided to look elsewhere and found Town Lodge Hotel for around 60 ish USD per night.
All in all, this is a place that worked for the night. If I was in a crunch, I would use it again, but it’s nothing luxurious of the sort.
Reasonable Airport Transfers
One of my biggest pet peeves about hotels around the world is when they charge exorbitant prices when it comes to airport transfers. I was happy to find that this hotel charged a reasonable 10$ one-way for either pickup or drop-off. Considering that this comes with the driver waiting outside for you, I think that is a good price (Uber is about the same).
The Rooms
Checking in, the front desk staff warmly greeted me and informed me that my room would be on the third floor of the property. The property is laid out with about 100 rooms, split across 5 floors (if I had to guess), and features a couple of different categories.
Naturally, I chose the cheapest option, which consisted of a simple double bed and a bathroom. Yes, it was small, but it was cheap and did what I needed it to do. Although on the flip side, the showers here are fantastic.
All of the basics were provided, such as powdered coffee, mugs, and two bottles of free water.
Free Breakfast
For those looking to capitalize on a couple of meals without leaving the hotel, there is no need to fret, as Town Lodge offers a decent sit-down restaurant. While I got into the hotel too late for dinner, I managed to indulge in the free breakfast that was offered at my room rate.
The restaurant is located right next to the lobby, on the ground floor. From around 6-10 am, the hotel offers a buffet-style breakfast with plenty to choose from, such as sausages, eggs, pancakes, and fresh pastries.
Amenities
If you haven't gathered by now, this isn't the type of hotel that features an Olympic-size swimming pool. It is aimed primarily at providing a cheap place to sleep near the airport.
However, free wifi is offered; additionally, if you need to book a conference room, one can be arranged. Other than that, no real standout amenities.
Final Thoughts
Town Lodge Hotel near Johannesburg is a decent place to head for a night of sleep in terms of cost. If your plan is to save a little bit of money and solely stay in the hotel, this is a place that I recommend. However, if you plan on heading out and mingling, I might recommend making the extra 20-minute journey into Johannesburg.
