Review: Lancaster Hotel Bangkok
Intro
Bangkok is a city that has a place in my heart, with vibrant energy and cheap accommodation; what more could you really want? Upon landing from Hong Kong on the Thai Airways 777-300 in Business Class, I had a short evening layover in Bangkok. Unfortunately, my mates were out of town, and the airport hotels were sold out. My next best bet was the Lancaster Hotel on the outskirts of Bangkok.
The Lancaster in Bangkok proved to be quite a decent hotel. Due to my hotels.com status, I was offered a free upgrade to the largest suite they had in the hotel. Talk about some loyalty! The hotel features a large pool, a 24-hour fitness center, and a restaurant; even if I utilized none of these during my 6 hours, that is impressive for the price.
Price+ Location
The Lancaster Hotel in Bangkok offers extremely reasonable rates for stays. Oftentimes, one can find last-minute prices for under 80$ per night, but my price came out to 98$, including taxes and fees.
There are two reasons for choosing the Lancaster, and I recommend doing so if you are in transit. Firstly, the price is very decent, and secondly, it's only about 25 minutes from Bangkok International Airport since you avoid most of the downtown traffic. At times, it has taken me hours to drive into downtown.
The Lobby+ Check-In
From the airport, it's about a 300 baht taxi to get to the Lancaster Hotel. Once I arrived, I found a large lobby with Christmas decorations still around. There was something eery about the hotel at this time; there was not a single soul in sight, and it was weirdly quiet.
Within no time, the staff welcomed me inside and began to check me in. Seeing as this was a last-minute booking, they thanked me for being a hotel.com gold member and informed me of my upgrade to the biggest suite they had 😃.
Minutes later, the lovely lady who checked me in escorted me to the elevators on the other side of the gorgeous lobby.
The Rooms
Throughout many of the hotels I have stayed in, I would estimate that in about half of the hotels, one has to use their keycard to go up in the elevators, and the other half does not need to. For the Lancaster, you do.
The room key holder was a very cute one; I actually ended up putting it on my infamous wall of travel (which I will post about another time).
My room for the night would be 1728. The suite was located to the right of the elevator and off to a very private side with just one other room.
Upon entering the room, a guest bathroom was located immediately to the right. Not sure if this was necessary for my one-night stay, but with bigger families, I am sure this is appreciated.
Moving along, the kitchen was located to the right of the entrance. This space had ample room for families, including a dining table and all necessary plating and utensils. Complementary coffee, water, and tea were provided, but of course, alcohol was an additional charge😅.
Opposite the kitchen was a beautiful relaxation space. The ambiance of the living room was on point, and the couch was wonderfully comfortable. In addition, the hotel had presented a fruit plate, presumably due to my status with hotels.com. A small gesture, but it doesn't happen much these days.
Another small niche I found was the small office located in the corner. This felt more like a condo then a hotel room, wow!
The Bedroom
Moving right along, the bedroom was located behind a lockable door. This means if you have kids and they are sleeping on the pullout couch, the parents can have privacy.
The bedroom in itself was beautiful featuring a vanity mirror, bedside chargers, electronic lights, and a rotatable flatscreen television.
The bed in itself was comfortable as well. Considering I was already shattered, I cannot comment on just how comfortable it was, but seeing as I slept 5 hours straight, I was overly happy.
The Main Bathroom
The main bathroom was located behind the bed and was modernly appointed. Dual sinks, a clean toilet, and a lovely shower proved to be perfect for the short stay. Although honestly, I'm not quite sure why there was a towel on the floor near the toilet😅.
A magnititude of amenities for cleaning were available. When reviewing hotels, this is an aspect that proves make or break a hotel.
Other Amenities
As mentioned earlier, the Lancaster (sounds very British, right) features a multitude of other amenities. Due to my quick transit, I didn't have time to check out any of them, but I'll provide some pictures from the internet.
A gorgeous rooftop pool is the staple piece of the hotel, while the fitness center looks decent from the pictures.
Pretty decent all around in terms of amenities, considering this is a city hotel.
Final Thoughts
The Lancaster in Bangkok is a very good hotel for a very select amount of travellers. If you are staying in Bangkok for over a night, I would recommend staying somewhere more central. Alternatively, if price isn't an issue, I would recommend one of the hotels at the airport or a sleep capsule (more on that soon). With that being said, it's a 25-minute drive from the airport and only 98$ per night, so it represents good value when in transit.
My stay was terrific at the Lancaster. With a free upgrade to the most luxurious suite at the hotel and a wonderful sleep, I have nothing to complain about. If I re-did this exact routing, I would stay here again in a heartbeat, hopefully without that eeriness in the air.
