Qantas First Class Mistake Fare

Intro

Yesterday, Qantas published a fare consisting of flying from Sydney/Melbourne over to Los Angeles for a 3000 USD roundtrip in First Class. Suffice it to say, this ticket routinely sells for well over 10,000 USD, meaning it was quite a steal.

However, unlike certain airlines that go ahead and honor some mistaken fares, Qantas has taken a different approach.

The Details

Qantas published this First Class fare, and within a matter of minutes, over 300 people were able to book into First Class on this ticket before Qantas ended up fixing it. But it's not all good news...

The airline has decided to take a different approach to honoring this First Class fare. Reports have indicated that Qantas sent out emails stating that they would move the passengers in First Class to Business Class (free of charge), or offer a full refund.

My Take

Surprisingly, I actually think that Qantas made a good compromise. As much as I would like mistake fares to be honored 100% of the time, realistically, they are not going to be. Instead of going ahead and just refunding the ticket, Qantas has offered a viable solution: seating those in Business Class.

Direct flights on the route from Syndey to Los Angeles routinely go upwards of 10,000 USD RT in Business Class. Striking a deal for 3000 USD roundtrip is a great deal. Perhaps not as great as First Class, but good nonetheless.

Qantas A380 Upper Deck

Qantas is notoriously more stingy on award space than other airlines, so if you went ahead and booked this trip, enjoy your trip down under! I've heard a lot of reports of people positioning themselves in Australia to take advantage of this!

My last point: Qantas releasing the mistake fare has led to news outlets blowing up Qantas. Perhaps an interesting marketing strategy 🤔.

Final Thoughts

Just yesterday, Qantas released a mistake fare consisting of flying First Class from down under to the US in First Class for a 3000 USD roundtrip. Although the airline will not be honoring those seated in First Class, they have offered business class at the same price or a full refund to those who booked. Props to Qantas for not just offering a refund.
