My Longest Flight This Year: United Polaris To Hong Kong

Konrad Tillman

Intro

Well, I have just finished the semester, and it is time to head off to Asia. I’m midway through my flight to Hong Kong, and wow, is it a long flight? Even if I am Business Class, which I happened to book for less than 1100$ OW, it still drags on like no tomorrow. With an hour until landing, here is what I got up to last night from Los Angeles to Hong Kong.

The Flight

Leaving the Polaris Lounge, it was finally time to get on this long double red-eye over to Hong Kong. In addition, it was a completely full flight down to every seat in economy.

My plan was to stay awake for the first five hours or so and then sleep for 10 hours straight just to wake up to the sunrise over Hong Kong. For some odd reason, a serious wave of exhaustion hit me as I ate and fell right asleep for 10 hours… For me, a 10-hour sleep anywhere is almost insane and unheard of. Something about sleeping on United Polaris with their bedding and the bulkhead seats… Another lovely addition is that United offers business class passengers free and comfortable pajamas on flights blocked over 14 hours. Perhaps this contributed to the good sleep, or perhaps it was just the extremely comfortable bed...

Aside from the lovely sleep, there were a couple of other quirks to the flight. For example, the purser on the flight was absolutely phenomenal, but the Hong Kong-based crew was the complete opposite. Usually, it's the other way around, which is odd.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to see a good-looking short rib on the menu. As a snack later on in the flight, the beef melt was fabulous.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I would say a very decent flight with United Airlines from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. If one is able to secure a bulkhead seat, I would say that the hard product is better than Cathay Pacific who operates the same route. Stay tuned for a full review soon!
