Jetblue Plans To Launch Boston To Madrid & Edinburgh: Exciting!
Intro
Jetblue has just announced its next international destinations for next summer, and they seem to be right in line with their new market strategy shift. This is fantastic news for those based in Boston, although loyal flyers in New York might just be a tad disappointed...
The Details
We have recently seen Jetblue switching strategies for the past few years, from cutting certain London and Paris routes to adding fleetwide Mini Mint. However, Jetblue seems to have decided to transition most of their long-haul flying from New York to Boston, as they plan to serve Edinburgh and Madrid from May 2025 to October 2025.
Between May 22nd and October 25th, Jetblue plans to operate a summer seasonal route from Boston to Edinburgh with the following schedule:
B61079: Boston-Edinburgh departing 10:30 PM arriving 10:10 AM (+1 day)
B61080: Edinburgh-Boston departing 12:10 PM arriving 2:22 PM
The 3000-odd-mile route will be operated by an A321neo featuring 16 business class suites (2 studios, 14 mint) and 144 economy seats (42 EMS).
Between May 23rd and October 25th, Jetblue plans to operate a summer seasonal route from Boston to Madrid with the following schedule:
B62261: Boston-Madrid departing 10:25 PM arriving 11:30 AM (+1 day)
B62260: Madrid-Boston departing 1:30 PM arriving 3:20 PM
The 3400-odd-mile route will be operated by an A321LR featuring 24 business class suites (2 studios, 22 mint) and 114 economy seats (22 EMS).
My Thoughts
It's interesting to see the strategy shift that Jetblue is implementing by adding two key destinations from Boston to Europe. Jetblue will have to go head to head with Delta Airlines and Iberia on these two routes, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to manage a decent load factor on these flights.
Much like Alaska at Seattle, Jetblue has plenty of loyal flyers in Boston and the Northeast as a whole. In addition, operating narrowbody jets to these destinations means that even if they don't succeed, the margins aren't as big for losing money compared to a half-filled, gas-guzzling 767.
Final Thoughts
Jetblue has just announced that it plans to add two new (from Boston) summer seasonal routes from their hub at Logan to Madrid and Edinburgh. It seems like Jetblue can't exactly make up its mind on its business plan after the merger with Spirit failed, but I would argue that this is a step in the right direction. They were never going to win the JFK-LHR/CDG markets, so why not take on a new approach?
