Iberia Takes Delivery Of First A321XLR

Konrad Tillman

Intro

Some exciting news in the aviation world has just arrived, as the very first A321XLR has just been delivered to the launch customer, Iberia. This is a plane that has the potential to change aviation in many ways, and we finally see the first one entering service soon! Let's go over the details🙂.

The Details

What is the Airbus A321XLR? This specific plane, which is part of the A320 family, is a long-range, low-capacity jet that has the option for airlines to serve destinations that they wouldn't be able to profit from with a widebody.

While we already have the A321neo and the A321LR, this is the latest addition to the family, which was announced almost 5 years ago! Originally, the launch customer was supposed to be Aer Lingus, but it eventually got swapped around so that Iberia could preview this beautiful jet.

Just take a look at these pictures!

These Business Class Cabins Look Beautiful!

The Iberia A321XLR is supposed to feature 14 seats in business class in a 1-1 configuration, while economy will feature 168 seats in a 3-3 configuration.

Additionally, passengers will have access to:

  • Bluetooth connectivity

  • USB C chargers

  • USB A chargers

  • Electronic device holders

  • Fast wifi (who knows).

Where Are The First Routes

For the first two weeks, we expect to see the first A321XLR flying around Europe for obvious reasons. When airlines take delivery of new aircraft or products, they are typically flown on short-haul products to familiarize the crew.

The inaugural flight is scheduled from Madrid to Paris on November 5th, operating as IB 569. Cash fares in business for the morning flight sit right around 574$.

However, as of November 14th, Iberia will operate:

  • daily service from Madrid to Boston

As of January 15th, Iberia expects to fly:

  • daily service from Madrid to Washington

Iberia has a tendency to be stingy when releasing award space closer to departure. There are a couple of dates available, so if this is a plane you want to fly, you might want to snap those up quickly. Be aware this is all subject to change...

Final Thoughts

The first Airbus A321XLR has just been delivered, 5 years after the project was announced. Iberia plans to operate the jet around Europe for the first 9 days and then later will be heading daily to Boston. This is an exciting development in the aviation market as a 4,700nm range for a narrowbody jet that is fuel efficient opens up a world of possibilities.
