Iberia Resuming Non-Stop Flights To Tokyo
Intro
While announced a couple of months ago, I thought it would be important to share the non-stop resumption that Iberia has brought from Madrid to Tokyo Narita. Currently, no other airlines operate this route, leaving a gap in the market, especially when it comes to connecting down to South America.
Let's get into it!
The Schedule
Iberia is set to operate this long flight with an Airbus A350-900 featuring 31 seats in Business Class in a 1-2-1 configuration, 24 premium economy seats in a 2-4-2 configuration, and 293 economy seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.
Initially, the schedule seems to be operating three times per week in each direction. The schedule is as follows:
IB281: Madrid (MAD) 11:55 am-Tokyo (NRT) 10:15 am (+1) (Sun/Thur/Sat)
IB282: Tokyo (NRT) 11:55 am- Madrid (MAD) 19:45 pm (Mon/Fri/Sun)
I think it's interesting to see the return flight getting in at 19:45 to Madrid due to the fact that a lot of South American connections are around midnight. Examples include Sao Paulo, Montevideo, and Santiago.
While this flight should produce decent numbers for travelers looking to vacation in Japan (or business travelers), I also think cargo and connecting traffic plays a big factor in the resumption.
Prices
Resumption of this flight begins on October 27th from Madrid to Tokyo. Tickets are already on sale, and surprisingly, not as bad as I expected.
On the contrast, Madrid to Tokyo in Business is seeing roundtrip fares around 3300$. At least when booking through JAL, that is.
In comparison, non-stop from London to Tokyo on Oneworld seems to be sitting around 4700$ for the lowest dates.
Final Thoughts
Iberia will be resuming its nonstop service from Madrid to Tokyo Narita starting on the 27th of October this year. This thrice-weekly service will be operated by an A350-900 with a block time of 14.5 hours eastbound and 15.5 hours westbound. Economy prices start at 1200$ roundtrip, while business class prices start at 3300$ roundtrip.
