Finally! American Airlines Bringing Back Blankets And Pillows For Certain Domestic Routes In First Class

Intro

I have always valued American Airlines as the best carrier in the US in terms of hard product and soft product. Some people may disagree, but my experiences have been over the top with them!

American Airlines Thank You Note

With that being said, American Airlines has secretly brought back pillows and blankets for certain transcontinental flights. Let's get into the details.

The Details

Recent reports from passengers flying on American Airlines have indicated that certain transcon red-eyes have been seeing pillows and blankets. A recent report from someone indicated that the San Francisco to Philadelphia contained a pillow and blanket.

American Airlines Pillow and Blanket

American Airlines hasn't officially announced anything, but I expect more premium routes to start receiving this. My ideas would contain SFO/LAX-MIA (the flights that aren't marketed as Flagship) and Seattle-MIA/PHL.

An interesting point of comparison is that Alaska recently stopped providing pillows to certain red-eyes (not sure about all). Now, with AA coming back to upgrade passengers' comfort, I think this might be a fantastic thing for AA and passengers.

Let's be realistic... taking a westbound red-eye on a narrowbody with strong tailwinds can be brutal. The relative costs of providing passengers in First Class with a blanket and pillow are quite low compared to the extra comfort passengers will receive. I think this is a great addition by AA, and I wouldn't be surprised to see driven demand due to this. It's not like United, Alaska, or Delta offers this 🥴.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines has decided to reward those who buy First Class on some of the more premium red-eyes by adding pillows and blankets to First Class. On paper, this may seem small, but AA will now be the only airline offering both of these options in a recliner seat. It goes a long way and goes to show that American Airlines is on top of its game at the moment (in some aspects, business-wise, not so sure).
