Ferry From Caye Caulker To Belize City: Everything You Need To Know
Intro
Following a tremendous time in Caye Caulker, I had to figure out how to make it to the Belize City Airport to catch my American Airlines flight up to Miami and then onwards to Los Angeles in First Class.
There are a couple of different options when it comes to transport between Caye Caulker and the mainland. On the way out, I got to fly in the cockpit of a Caravan on Maya Air, but on the way back, I decided to try the much cheaper ferry.
The Ferry Is Cheap And Punctual
Ferries run by the hour pretty much in Caye Caulker (which is a fantastic thing when you miss the one you were supposed to be on)
In order to find the ferry, walk along the east side of the island on the beach, and you will see signs for the ferry. There are a couple of different options, but I chose to settle with the main one. Above is what the terminal looks like.
Tickets can be purchased for about 15$ at the counter or around 25$ roundtrip. Considering it's about an hour and a bit of a ferry, this isn't too bad at all.
It's Not The Most Luxurious...
Look, it's not the most luxurious ferry in the world, but it gets you from point A to point B safely and quickly.
Being out on the water is always a treat, no matter if that includes swimming with sharks 😅.
Arrival
You arrive in the eastern part of Belize City at the ferry terminal. Before you ask, yes, it is very safe, and no, you are not going to die. Next, you have to get from the ferry terminal to either your accommodation or the airport.
Taxi drivers are waiting to rip off tourists with a flat rate avaialable to the airport at 25$ per person. Yeah, and it's a shared taxi. 25$ for a 25-minute drive seems a bit steep to me, but compared to the US or London, I'll take it a heartbeat.
Even if the car was barely functioning, the driver was an absolute sweetheart, and we had some great conversations about his beautiful country.
Final Thoughts
If you want to go from Belize City to Caye Caulker and you don't have a budget set, take a plane. However, if you are looking to save about 100$, I highly recommend taking this ferry. It's efficient, it's cheap, and everything went very smoothly.
