Delta Flight Attendant Shows Up To Work 7x Over Legal Alcohol Limit, Yikes

Konrad Tillman

Intro

Just last week, a very fascinating yet disturbing thing happened at Delta Airlines. In the past, the Netherlands was known to conduct random breathalyzers, and now they have caught two more people who are over the limit. What is shocking is just how over the limit one of them was.

0.143

Last Friday, Delta Flight 49 from Amsterdam to New York Kennedy was scheduled to operate the roughly 8-hour flight from the largest city in the Netherlands. As fate would have it, two crew members showed up to work and failed to pass the breathalyzer. While one was only slightly over the limit at 0.024 (cutoff is 0.02), a female flight attendant blew a 0.143 on a breathalyzer.

While the flight did end up departing on time and arriving on time in New York, service was more limited due to the two crew members not being able to fly.

My Thoughts

One has to wonder how someone is able to show up at an airport with a blood alcohol level of 0.143. It is also factually proven that women, due to dispersion in body water, are more prone to feel the effects of intoxication more than men. There must have been signs that she was intoxicated or otherwise; could this be a more serious issue?

Like I said, I am never one to judge. People make mistakes all the time. Even though it is a security issue in case of emergency, I am happy that they caught it.

I understand flight attendants heading out for a fun night during a layover, especially on a Thursday night in Amsterdam. However, with DL49 departing at 10:45 am, presumably, she was breathalyzed around 9 am, right? If your body breaks down a drink an hour, a lot of alcohol must have been consumed, is my guess.

Whatever happened, I hope it all gets worked out. As I said, this could resemble a serious safety issue in case of an emergency.

Final Thoughts

Two Delta flight attendants, scheduled to operate DL49 from Amsterdam to New York, blew over the legal limit for alcohol on a breathalyzer last Friday. While one of the flight attendants barely blew over, the other one blew a 0.143; how she is walking straight is impressive! However, this can be a serious safety issue, which I presume Delta will deal with the utmost importance.

I also want to add that it must be tough sometimes as a flight attendant. Rarely getting the time off to fully enjoy a night out and constantly on the move.
