Bedridden In Dakar, Senegal: Always Factor In A Rest Day For Travel

Konrad Tillman

Intro

The Iron Ore Train was an experience I will never forget, and while a lot of the rides were unbelievable, there was one part that did stick with me a little too long. During the night, my masks became extremely dirty from the iron ore seeping through. Considering I had no idea how to retie my protective covering, I must have gotten sick onboard the train.

24 Hours In Bed

Due to my overtiredness, I decided to book a more upscale place closer to the airport than the last time I was in Dakar. However, I wasn't able to use much of the Baobab Soleil, as most of the 24 hours consisted of coughing up blood and sleeping. Yes, you read that right: I was coughing up blood for 24 hours straight, and it happened to continue for another 10-12 days after I left Dakar.

I think I lived partially in this bathroom

Do you ever get to the point when you travel that you just need a day to rest? I always advise fellow travelers that rest days are important on longer trips; otherwise, you will get burnt out. Rarely do I actually listen to my own advice, though 😅 (do as I say, not as I do). Unfortunately, it wasn't one of those days when you sat in bed and watched Netflix; it was one of those days when you sat in bed and it hurt to move.

I just wanted to sleep forever

Anyway, while I wish I had gone out and explored more of Senegal, the lesson of the story is: listen to your body when you are traveling.

Final Thoughts

If you happen to be a constantly on-the-move type of traveler, make sure to factor in a couple of rest days during your travel. In addition, if you happen to take the Iron Ore Train, make sure that you are prepared to feel a little bit sick afterward. Maybe not as far as coughing up blood type sick, but at least over-exhausted.
