Bali's Best New Restaurant: 19 Courses At Shun Omakase
Intro
Having a second home in Bali has led me to try many of the "best" restaurants around the island, such as Mauri, Locavore, Amici, etc. However, there is a new restaurant in Bali that has just opened called Shun Omakase.
I offered to take my mate out for dinner in Bali after he set up a tour of Dhaka for me, and he decided that we go to this new spot. A 19-course tasting menu for just over 100$. Here's what visiting Shun Omakase was like.
Location and Reservation
If you are familiar with Bali, Shun Omakase is located inside Tamora playground in Berawa. Once you get to the side entrance, a member of staff will be waiting to guide you to where the restaurant is located.
Reservations need to be booked online, which can be made on their website here. There are two seatings per night, with the first being at 6:30 pm and the second at 8:30 pm. Guests have a choice between a 14-course tasting menu (1.4 million rupiah) or a 19-course tasting menu (1.9 million rupiah). My recommendation is to go with the 19-course menu as the dishes are small, but if you do decide on the 14-course menu, the staple dishes of Wagyu, Toro, and others are included.

Here is a quick look at how the meal went:
Okay, so now the real question... How was the food? I found the food to be up there, with some of the best in Bali, and for the price, it was very, very good. However, this isn't the same as eating in Japan; just keep that in mind. The flavors were good, but the quality did feel like it left a bit to be desired. Most, if not all, of the ingredients need to be imported, meaning the freshness of a same-day catch will not be there.
The restaurant's ambiance is perfect if you bring someone on a date. There is dim lighting, slow-moving music, and the service is top-notch. It is a 7 person chef's table, where you will be seated next to one another, allowing for good conversation.
The Check
Something I didn't mention in the beginning is that there is a 1 million rupiah deposit when booking a reservation with Shun Omakase. This is a non-refundable deposit that goes towards the dining experience.
The final total came out to 4.5 million rupiah, including lots of Sparkling water and 3 glasses of wine. Wine is just over 10$ a glass or between 70-300$ per bottle. However, due to the million rupiah deposit being put on the check, the total came out to 3.5 million rupiah (about 225 USD).
Final Thoughts
When it comes to dining in Bali, this might be one of the best experiences in terms of ambiance and service. However, just note that the quality isn't the same as if this was in London or Tokyo, or New York, for that matter. The price also reflects that with the 14 courses coming out to under 100 USD.
Would I come back to eat here again? 100%. Although this would only be on special occasions though instead of the ordinary meal. If you are looking for a more traditional dinner, I would recommend the likes of Mauri, Buzo, or Amici (I will be writing about these in the future).
