All British Airways 777-300's Now Reconfigured

Intro

While this is no news to the aviation world, I wanted to touch very briefly on the British Airways reconfiguration of the 777 family. Years ago, British Airways introduced all new cabins to update their old 2-4-2 configuration on their 777s and their quite dated first-class product. Well, all Heathrow-based 777s have now been reconfigured with a small caveat.

The 777-300

A couple of years ago, I got extremely lucky on a flight from London to Los Angeles, where I got to review the newer British Airways First Class cabin on the 777-300. This represented a terrific update to the previous First Class seats on the 77W and actually felt more or less like a First Class product. For starters, all 16 of the 77W's feature a mini cabin of 8 First Class seats that look like this:

With sliding doors!

And a lovely soft product.

However, on these newly reconfigured 777-300s, British Airways has decided to lay these out with three cabins of Club Suites totaling 76 seats in Business Class. Club Suites is a very decent product and one I would highly recommend!

So, the moral of the story is: if you are scheduled to fly on a 777-300 operated by British Airways, be prepared for a lovely experience as these planes are brand spanking new.

777-200's

With the 777-200, it gets a bit more complicated. All of the 28 772s that were located at Heathrow were retrofitted with new Club Suites, but the Gatwick-based planes were never scheduled to be reconfigured. Since travel has picked up significantly, BA decided to relocate three 777s over to Heathrow from Gatwick, which now flies with the older configuration in a 2-4-2.

If you have a flight scheduled for the 777-200, check and see if it is operated by one of the Gatwick-based planes or Heathrow-based. For most high-yield routes, expect to receive the nicer club suites in business class. This isn't a foolproof method, as one of these jets happened to do a JFK-LHR route the other day...

Keep in mind: these can switch until the day of departure

Final Thoughts

If you have the choice of choosing the 777-300 or the 777-200 on British Airways, I would highly recommend the former due to all of the fleet having the new cabins. However, if you do happen to end up on a 777-200, keep in mind that most of the Heathrow-based aircraft has been reconfigured.
