A Throwback To My 31 Hour Birthday In 2020

Konrad Tillman

Intro

Well, it's my birthday today, and I am doing absolutely nothing but writing a final exam. I thought, for memory's sake, it would be a cool idea to talk about my longest birthday ever, 31 hours, which I lived back in 2020. I had saved up my money from working the past 6 months and decided to splurge on a birthday trip of a lifetime.

Dubai

The birthday celebrations had technically started in Dubai. A week before the day, I had found saver space to fly with Emirates on a retrofitted 777-300 from JFK to DXB in Business Class, as well as a decently priced hotel in Dubai. I had never been, and this was a place that you often hear a lot about. I had a lovely time relaxing in Dubai, which is not often what you think of the place.

The highlight of the UAE trip would have had to have been the jetskiing in chucking rain the day before my flight. The company advised me that I shouldn't go out due to rain and 7-foot swells, but I went anyway and flipped the jetski 😂 (flipped it back as well).

Club Suites

The day before my birthday, saver space opened up to fly on the new Club Suites (at the time) from Dubai to London on an A350. Seeing as I was going to be heading home for my bday (London), I decided to take advantage of this deal and take the 6-hour flight over. It was really beautiful to do since flying is probably my favorite activity in the world, and I had the opportunity to fly with an airline that is very close to my heart.

Then London came around. When I say I splurged on this trip, I really did splurge like no other. As a kid, I would often drive past the Shard and look at what a beautiful building it was. It was my dream to always go inside, and when I found a rate for a suite for 800 Pounds per night, I had to book a one-night stay.

It was a stay that I'll never forget and one that I will likely never have again. The views out of the rooms are simply incredible, and waking up to room service on my birthday (albeit hungover) was incredible.

Mexico City

Waking up over the beautiful views of London City, I had no idea where I was going to go/what I was going to do. I happened to find saver space to Mexico City in Business Class on the BA 787-9, which meant that I could live a 31-hour birthday. Without hesitation, I booked the flight and left for Heathrow.

It was perfect in every angle. I view Mexico City as my favorite city* in the world, and thankfully, I have lots of friends there. When I landed, a friend had arranged a car to pick me up, and we went to dinner in Nobu (the best one in the world) and out clubbing that night.

To this day, this long birthday was one of the most incredible memories I have. During COVID, it was a lot easier to find saver space on these routes, and combining that with the money I had saved up, it was a trip I will never forget.

Final Thoughts

Birthdays are a beautiful aspect of life that we often take advantage of. It's important to enjoy your birthdays wherever you are or whatever you are doing. I'll never forget this one, though.
