A Night Out With My Best Friend In Johannesburg
Intro
There are few things in life that are greater than friendships. Actually, come to think of it, I believe the most important part of life is being around people who love you/you love. So, when my friend saw my instagram story that I was in Mozambique, he hit me up, letting me know he was in South Africa. Somehow/someway, our dates aligned for a night to be reunited, as we hadn't seen each other in four years.
I don't usually write stuff like this on this blog since the internet is a place that is prone to judgment. However, I wanted to share a wholesome night out with my best friend who I hadn't seen in four years.
A Wholesome Night
Upon arriving from Vilankulo with Airlink, I was met by the hotel staff that would be taking me to the airport hotel (The Sunrock, for those wondering). With all honesty, I am not going to review it as I barely slept, and my friend that I was meeting booked it for me.
Arriving at the hotel, I hadn't let my friend know that I had landed yet 😉 as I wanted to suprise him. However, as the car pulled inside the Sunrock Hotel, I happened to see him walking alongside. I asked the driver to stop, and jumped out. The look on his face was of the utmost surprise (I guess it worked).
Immediately, it was time for a quick bev as the night was still young. Yes, I look a little worse for the wear; I hadn't shaved in almost a month.
A quick word on the Sunrock before we continue. The Sunrock is a nice little hotel located about an 8-minute drive away from O.R. Tambo International Airport. At a decent price point of 80$ per night, I found the rooms to be spacious and the owner to be a lovely man (we went clubbing with his son).
Once I had finished checking in, dropping off my bags, and getting freshened up, we had a couple of more drinks and headed out for the first stop of the evening: steaks! I mean, come on, when in South Africa, right?
There was a local mall not too far away, which had plenty of restaurants that we could eat at, but they had made a reservation for 4 at this one place serving delicious steaks (don't ask me the name; the Jaeger had kicked in by then 😂🥴).
Anyway, it was a lovely meal filled with many bottles of wine. My gosh. The beef in South Africa is some of the best in the world, and combining that with the wine, this is a country I love.
However, there was still a night to go. From the restaurant, we all piled in the back of an Uber, certainly feeling the effects of the vino 😉. 4 Englishmen drunk in the back of an Uber; what could possibly go wrong?
Arriving back at the hotel, there was a minibus from the hotel, filled with men and women, waiting to take us out to a local nightclub 10 minutes away. Guess who was driving? The owner of the hotel 😂. This is how memories are made.
We had a lovely night all around, filled with my drunken ass thinking I could hit a step back fade away beer pong shot, dancing with locals to Justin Bieber on the dancefloor, and laughing the night away.
Final Thoughts
While it was a wonderful night all around, it wasn't until 2 am when I got back, and I had to be up at 5 am. Sometimes I wonder what I do to my body 🤦♂️. Looking back, would I have changed a single thing? No. I had a lovely night with my best mate, and that is all that matters. If I can leave you with a message from this post, it's that life is too short; go see your friend who you haven't seen, go out and have a good night, and live every day like it's your last (to an extent). We only have one life, and it took me 22 years to realize that. As an ex-drug addict who spent 1/5 of his life in rehab (now clean 3 years from substances (minus alcohol)), it took a lot of self-reflection to realize that the only thing permanent is change ❤️.
